Homer L. Hartage
President & Professional Guardian
….
I was born in Webster County Georgia, where my family had a small family farm. At an early age, our mother moved the family to Leesburg, Florida, where I was raised by a single mother. The care that I was given had a lasting impression and instilled in me a desire to care for others as well. After college I moved my family to Orlando, Florida.
I am a Professional Guardian and have a BA degree in Psychology from Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey. A long history of community and family service prepared me for a career as a Professional Guardian. This included ten years caring for a live-in family member with Alzheimer Disease. I understand what families go through when someone they love is ill with this dreadful disease.
I am a Professional Guardian of more than sixty Wards as well as a Veteran Fiduciary and Representative Payee. I am a member of the National Guardianship Association, the Florida Health Care Association and certified with the Florida Office of Professional Guardians.
My community service includes being elected to the Orange County Commissioner in 1998, where I served eight years. During this time, I was able to improve services for medically needy families and had a Parent Abuse bill passed by the Florida Legislature to help protect adult parents from physical abuse by their minor children. I entered professions guardianship after a life-long history of public service. Every day I live the AgedCare mission; to serve and make a difference in the lives of persons in need.

I was born in Savannah, GA but I call Florida my home. I was raised by a military family and have lived in Georgia, Florida, Arizona, and Panama South America. These experiences taught me to be comfortable in many different situations when caring for others.
I have a 12-year background working in the medical field. This includes assisting in the management of a medical office where I handled complex cases dealing with persons with mental health and/or addiction issues. I joined AgedCare professional guardians to expand upon this experience. At AgedCare, I manage all essential daily operations. My passion to help people is the driving force of my life today.

My community service includes working with the Orlando Amateur Basketball Club, a neighborhood basketball team of desiring youth, and planning their tournaments across the country to allow them the life experiences they deserve.

Growing up, Shirley’s drive and ambition often resulted in feeling like the girl who never “fit in”. She realized early on that pursuing a future equal to the energy bound up in her bones would require her to leave her hometown of Kissimmee, Florida, leaving it in her past. That energy would bring her to Windermere, Florida, where she learned to embrace life completely.
Success came easily and quickly. She earned a B.A. in Sociology, married and started a family of her own, and then spent twenty years as a Family Counselor and Program Director for Family Self-Sufficiency, providing services to thousands throughout Central Florida and Polk County, Florida.

Success came easily and quickly. She earned a B.A. in Sociology, married and started a family of her own, and then spent twenty years as a Family Counselor and Program Director for Family Self-Sufficiency, providing services to thousands throughout Central Florida and Polk County, Florida.
She founded her own home healthcare company and two successful mental health agencies prior to pursuing her passion as a Life Coach, where her non-judgmental spirit has guided others in cultivating and maintaining healthy relationships. By her late forties, she had realized a sense of accomplishment.
In 2008, after the loss of both her parents who died at an early age, and losing her newborn baby son, Miles, within ten days of his healthy birth due to a rare terminal illness, she started second-guessing herself and once again began looking for answers. She began to focus on the things that truly mattered to her: family. She mentally checked off her accomplishments and reflected on them.
It was at this time Shirley realized there was much more for her to do in life. She pursued meditation and prayer, going to the gym to relieve stress, socializing with friends, and completely changing her surroundings. She connected with other homemakers, chased soft business start-ups, volunteered for fundraising events, and joined various charitable boards. As Shirley describes it, “This filled my days but not my burning desire for self-fulfillment. I was having the best time of my life, but I could not find the light.”
When her husband left his laptop on the kitchen counter one day before going to work, she instinctively sat down at the computer and opened a blank page, as though “guided by an invisible force.”
“Thoughts and characters were dancing in my head, imagined from the plethora of stories I’d heard from my years as a mental health counselor. They were screaming to be released.” Shirley quickly realized that those years and all her experience helping others were the breeding ground that had prepared her for the life ahead.
“The words began to flow, rushing forth like water chasing its path to the open sea.” She barely made time to eat, drink or sleep. She was in the light. The muse had struck and it shone brighter and brighter as she released her thoughts onto paper.
The experience was life-altering. For the first time in years, Shirley began to focus on her own internal struggle and self-development. With her husband, Arland Michael Simmons, her two sons, Brian and Meyer, and her daughter, Sydney, whose successes she is proud to have influenced, she now believes her life is full and complete.
“I present to you Beautiful Otherness: The Story Of One Woman’s Desire To Fit Into Her Own World.
And a heavenly shout-out to son, Miles Simmons.

I was born in the Orlando area, but my formative years were spent in the mountains of West Virginia. During high school, my family relocated back to Orlando, and I graduated from Lake Howell High School in Winter Park. Later, I earned a degree in Business Administration from the University of Central Florida (Go Knights!).
My entrepreneurial spirit ignited early—I started my first job delivering newspapers at the age of nine. Over time, I owned and managed two businesses and co-founded a nonprofit organization. In 2001, I married my best friend, and together we became foster parents.

Additionally, I’m a proud member of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, Orlando Chapter.
In 2024, I joined The Hartage Foundation as a case manager and became a Professional Guardian. This role allows me to live out my true passion—to serve families and give a voice to the voiceless. I work with diverse populations affected by Dementia, Alzheimer’s, developmental disabilities, and mental health issues.
